Many of us spend a good chunk of our day at work.  This is why it is important for workplaces to promote healthy, active ways of life.  There are many good reasons why employers, regardless of their size, would want to address employee health.  Besides the obvious reason of having active health employees, workplace wellness programs can reduce healthcare costs, increase individual and organizational productivity and decrease absenteeism.   The following examples are ways we work with our partners to promote workplace wellness.

Health Risk Appraisals (HRAs)
HRAs offer people a chance to receive a confidential, detailed assessment of their risk for a variety of diseases and other health problems.  People pick up a questionnaire and fill it out on their own – it will take around 6 or 7 minutes.  The questionnaires are then fed into a scanner and in a few minutes, people have their own personal health profile.   The information is not meant to take the place of a doctor and people are encouraged to bring the information to their next doctor’s appointment to review with their medical provider.  If your business, school, or community group is located in Portland and you would like to offer HRAs to people, contact us for more information.

Southern Maine Wellness Council (SMWC)
Healthy Portland is a SMWC member.  The Council is a non-profit organization housed in the University of Southern Maine's Lifeline center.  The Council is made up of over 50 profit and non-profit organizations throughout southern Maine.  We are a local resource to get information, training and resources to help an organization either develop or expand a workplace wellness program.  Training, workshops and a certificate course in the Fundamentals for Worksite Wellness are offered through the Council.  For more information, visit the Sothern Maine Wellness Council website.
