Over 2,200 people die each year in Maine because of tobacco use.  But we are making a difference.   From 1997 to 2005, Maine reduced smoking rates by 64% among middle school students and by 59% among high school students.  However, adult smoking rates have remained steady.  We are committed to working hard to help people quit smoking and to reduce involuntary exposure to second hand smoke.  Here are some examples of how we work with our partners to promote tobacco free living.

Smoke Free for ME - Smoke Free Housing Coalition
The Smoke Free Housing Coalition is made up of about 50 landlords, tenants, and public health advocates who are committed to reducing involuntary exposure to secondhand smoke.  For more information, visit our Smoke Free Housing website.  We will be having a Smoke Free Housing conference on May 17 in South Portland and again in Bangor on May 18.  This conference is only the second of its kind in the Nation and we expect to draw a fairly large crowd from Maine and other States as well.  Click here to register for the conference.

Tobacco Free Areas in Portland
We work with area businesses, schools and community groups to develop tobacco-free policies.  We have worked with the city of Portland, Portland Public Schools, Portland Parks and Recreation, Metro (the Portland transit system) and others!  For example, we worked with Portland Parks and Recreation to help them develop and implement a tobacco policy for all Portland parks and recreation facilities.  Our work was highlighted in the Developing Policies that Support Tobacco-Free Community Recreation Action Packet distributed by the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  You can read our real Maine example, Healthy Portland - Tobacco-Free Parks and Recreation.

New Grants

Quit Smoking Assistance for Construction Company Employees: This grant is from the Partnership For A Tobacco Free Maine (PTM), a program of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.  In collaboration with four other Healthy Maine Partnerships in Southern Maine, Healthy Portland has hired a part-time staff person to help decrease smoking rates among people working in the construction field in Southern Maine.  Some of the services offered as part of this grant include technical assistance to create and implement workplace tobacco policies, on-site smoking cessation classes for employees and free materials designating the workplace smoke-free.  For more information, contact Bethany at
bms@portlandmaine.gov or 874-8634.

Helping new moms stay quit– Relapse Prevention Among Postpartum Women: This grant is from the Partnership For A Tobacco Free Maine (PTM), a program of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.  Healthy Portland, Communities Promoting Health Coalition, the Family Birth Center at Maine Medical Center, the Center for Tobacco Independence and CD & M are partnering to prevent relapse among postpartum women who recently quit smoking.  Studies suggest relapse rates among women who quit smoking during pregnancy are as high as 85%.  This project includes phone support for postpartum women who currently smoke or have recently quit smoking.  In addition to the support, these partners are working with women to create a brochure specific to the issues associated with relapse.  For more information, contact Bethany at bms@portlandmaine.gov or 874-8634.

Smoke Free Housing – Higher Profits, Happier Tenants, a Healthier Apartment Building: This grant is from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and was written in collaboration with the Smoke-Free Housing Coalition of Maine.  The grant’s initiatives will cover the entire state, but the people of Portland will benefit in a big way.  Portland will receive landlord education classes and tools, technical assistance to our landlords and much more.  For more information, contact Bethany at bms@portlandmaine.gov or 874-8634.
